NEBAJ – LAFF 2024
The University of Queensland, St Lucia QLD, Australia
Description
NEBAJ
Nebaj is a drama and biographical film, directed by Kenneth Muller, that tells the story of Tomas Guzaro, a man born in 1950 who would become an Ixil pastor, saving the lives of more than 250 villagers from violent guerrilla warfare during Guatemala’s armed conflict. Born in the foothills of Cerro Sumal, a Mayan place for the Ixil group, as a child, his country suffered a turning point when an elected government broke the tradition of landowner partiality and decided to distribute land among villagers, causing a protest movement that became militarized. Guzaro, then, was instrumental in leading a defection movement, preventing the guerrillas from using the Ixil regions as a base, which triggered the guerrilla armed forces to attack the inhabitants and led the pastor to sacrifice everything to help his people.
ABOUT THE LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL (LAFF)
The Latin American Film Festival (LAFF) is an initiative of the Latin American Embassies in Australia to showcase Latin American culture. It is a not-for-profit event created to promote our culture and reach out to places where Latin American cinema or Latin American culture in general is seldom present. It brings communities together, promotes multiculturalism and increases understanding and appreciation towards the Latin American community through the universal language of film.
The event is now in its 18th consecutive year and is the largest event in Australia. Every year, it tours around at least half a dozen cities. This year, LAFF is comprised of 13 different films, one for each participating country: Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Chile.
The Latin American Embassies in Australia organise the LAFF with the support of other not-for-profit organisations that share the vision of promoting culture. On this occasion, the Latin American Community of Australia (QLD) Incorporated, LACA QLD, organises the festival in Brisbane in collaboration with HolaNetworking.
